MEETING DATES 2016/17 (PDF)
CHAIR OF GOVERNORS STATEMENT
So this is an exciting year. We said goodbye to Chris Seward who served this school and its pupils well for 15 years and we welcome Adam Thorne, our new Headteacher.
Chris was ambitious for our students – relentlessly focused on enabling them to achieve and often surpass their personal goals. My fellow governors and I are confident that, in Adam, we have appointed an exceptional, inspirational and strategic leader with the skills, drive and ambition to build upon our achievements to date and to take the school forward into the years ahead.
We need to further develop teaching and learning, significantly renew our school facilities and extend and invigorate the wide range of educational and extra-curricular opportunities that our students enjoy. We also need to develop, motivate and empower a talented and professional staff team and continue to work together as a highly committed team of governors.
We know that we are facing new opportunities and challenges; our potential role in multi academy trusts, dynamic curriculum reform and significantly decreasing resources. Together we need to shape the direction of travel and have the vision to see future potential and the drive to make it happen.
It is important that we can stand apart and observe the overall picture. In our work on the governing body we have three core roles:
To be strategic - not operational. Understanding and addressing what is best for the school in the context of current Government Policy. Not just for this academic year but for the future.
To act as a critical friend in the development of the school. Getting to know our school and asking the questions that should be asked.
To be accountable. Accountable to pupils and parents in particular, but also to the whole school community including our school staff and the wider local community.
2016/2017 will be a challenging year as the school faces considerable change, financial challenge and curriculum reform. As a governing body we will continue to work closely with the senior leadership team to ensure that we have in place a clear strategic direction for the development of the school and a strong framework of accountability; through robust scrutiny, challenge and support.
As governors we are ambitious for all of our school students, seeking to develop them fully as individuals and to prepare them for their role in a changing world. We must support and challenge the senior leadership team to ensure excellence in teaching and learning, to create a safe and supportive learning environment and to foster a school community that promotes pride, equality and achievement.
Davenant Foundation School ‘nurtures mind, body and spirit’. This ethos is fundamental to all aspects of school life and to the strategic direction of the school. As we continue to clearly articulate our vision and ethos to the school and wider community, we will maintain our reputation as a high-achieving and caring Christian school, building partnerships for improvement within the school, the local community and the wider world. Our young people will continue to receive the highest standards of educational excellence and will continue to give of their best, to achieve and to progress.
Thank you for your support. We look forward to working with you as students, parents and stakeholders, to make this a happy and successful school throughout the next academic year and beyond.
