Essex Book Awards 2015

Every year, Davenant students take part in the Essex Book Awards.

Over the last 5 months, students in the Davenant Book Club have been enjoying participating in the 9th Book Awards, and have read and reviewed 6 shortlisted books chosen by the Essex School Library Service.

The Book Club's favourite was 'Never Ending' by Martyn Bedford; other titles included 'The Middle of Nowhere' by Geraldine McCaughrean, 'Bone Jack' by Sara Crowe, 'I Predict a Riot' by Catherine Bruton and 'The Bubble Wrap Boy' by Phil Earle.

On the 25th March, 15 students from the Book Club visited The Boswells School in Chelmsford for the Finals of the Book Awards. They had the opportunity to meet authors Martyn Bedford and Geraldine McCaughrean. The winning book was 'She Is Not Invisible' by Marcus Sedgwick. Students were able to ask questions. It was a great morning - our students behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school.

Congratulations to Finlay Jordan, who was the winner of the best book review for 'Never Ending.'

Harry Potter Event

On 4th March, 42 Year 7 students, selected for their excellent behaviour for learning grades, were invited to the Arter Library for a Magical Harry Potter Event.  The library was transformed into a sorting hall, where the students were invited firstly to sit on the sorting chair and pick their Hogwarts house. The groups then moved around the library enjoying 4 activities, including making wands and bookmarks and listening to members of staff reading key excerpts from the Harry Potter series.

One of the students who attended said, ‘It was the most fun I have had since joining Davenant!’.
