Students visit final of 2016 Essex Book Awards

On Wednesday 16th March, the Davenant's Book Club members visited Moulsham High School in Chelmsford for the announcement of the Essex Book Award winner for 2016.

The students read the 6 nominated books between October and February half term and clearly had their favourites.

The group joined with 17 of the 35 schools in Essex taking part in a tightly packed hall to hear from 4 of the shortlisted authors.

The authors were Sam Hepburn (“If you were me”), Ali Sparkes (“Car-Jacked”), Jane McLoughlin (“The Crowham Martyrs) and Kerr Thomson (“The Sound of Whales”).

The winner was announced (dramatic drum roll)……Ali Sparkes “ Car-Jacked”.

Finlay Jordan in Year 8 won the Book Award prize for the best review of Ali’s book and Kate Smith in Year 7 won the Davenant Foundation School 10th Anniversary Prize for her engagement in this years’ Book Club.

The students said, “I’m glad Car-Jacked won because it was a mind blowing book”…..“After the presentation, we went to the library where we had the opportunity to meet the authors and get autographs, pictures and signed books.”

Author visit, World Book Day and magic times in the school Library

Author and animator, Christian Darkin, visits Davenant students

It's been a busy time in the Arter library this half term.

On Friday 26th February, we welcomed author and animator Christian Darkin, who spoke to Key Stage 3 during their assembly about his work. He then ran a 2-hour Creative Writing session for year 7s where they wrote 'choose your ending' stories followed by a 2-hour Animation Workshop with Year 10 computing students in the afternoon. Christian signed copies of his books for the Library, which are now available for the students to borrow.

Celebrating World Book Day with a 'magical' event

On Thursday 3rd March, the Library celebrated World Book Day by giving out £1 book vouchers for all of Key Stage 3 and a Harry Potter Event for Year 7's, who were selected on the grounds of excellent ‘Behaviour for Learning’ grades. During the event, the Arter Library was transformed into an interpretation of Hogwarts, students were 'sorted' into 4 houses and then the fun started. The students took part in 4 activities; listening to the opening chapter of the first Harry Potter book, making sweet treats, creating bookmarks and making wands - a spellbinding time was had by all.

Also on World Book Day, the staff took part in a ‘Name the Shelfie’ competition, where they had to guess the owner of a variety bookshelves from photos that staff had submitted. The competition was won by Headteacher, Mr Seward.

OFFICE 365

This week, during assembly time, students are all being introduced to Office 365.  This presentation is the one shown in assembly and provides all the details that students need to get started.  Support is available for this during lunchtimes in room 119.

CALLING ALL FORMER STUDENTS

CALLING ALL FORMER STUDENTS

If you’re a former student of Davenant Foundation School we want to hear from you!

Davenant Foundation School is currently working with the education charity Future First to connect with our former students and build a network of alumni.

If you are a former student of our school then we would love for you to get in touch! By joining our network you’ll be invited to revisit the school, see old faces (both staff and former classmates) and help to support us and our students.

How can you get involved?

We want our students to hear about the diverse range of courses and careers their predecessors have gone on to do since leaving our doors and show them that if our alumni can do it, so can they!

You can support us in a range of ways, from speaking about what you’ve done since leaving school, to acting as a career mentor, giving mock interviews or even providing work experience. The possibilities are endless and we’d love to hear how you’d like to help us inspire our students.   To join our network and get involved, please sign up here. Once you’ve registered, we’ll send you updates throughout the year with our latest news and let you know about upcoming opportunities to get involved.

You can also contact us directly by emailing our Future First Alumni Officer, Kat Leadbetter, on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
